Oh My, Internet is a heavy Polluter!

Segundo um Artigo publicado no site Uptime Intitute os data-centers já são um grande poluidor do planeta, e mais se tornarão no futuro:

Data Centers are anything but fluffy. They are huge, energy-sucking giants — many the size of small towns. They are environmental disasters and the only thing fluffy about them is the C02 emissions they belch out. Data Centers will in time according to The Uptime Institute become bigger polluters than the aviation industry. Data Centers require massive amounts of energy to operate — often as much energy is used to cool the centers as to power them. All that heat has to go somewhere. If you think your air conditioning unit is an ecological no-no, then consider the AC demands on a data center the size of 5 football fields, then consider further that according to market research firm IDC, there are over 7,000 major data centers worldwide, and many more in the process of being built. By the way, just because they are big does not make them efficient; it is estimated that around 1/3rd of Data Center servers continually sit idle.

Quando andei há uns meses a procura de Alojamento, ainda pesquisei por hostings que tivessem um data-center alimentado por energias renováveis, mas o custo que eu procurava não ia de encontro à oferta, e vi que poderia haver algumas interrupções de serviço caso as condições climatéricas não colaborassem, casos dos hostings powered por energia Solar.

Embora possa ser um um bocado ambiguo o facto de eu não ser uma utilizadora destas soluções e estar aqui a evangelizar o uso das mesmas, creio que para soluções não comerciais possam ser uma alternativa viável. Por enquanto ainda não uso, mas num futuro próximo serei utilizadora. Penso até começar a enviar uma alternativa de Green Hosting quando faço uma proposta de Orçamento de Webdesign. Pode ser que alguma empresa inclua esta politica na sua missão de Responsabilidade Social.
