Technical SEO Checklist: Fix the Foundations First
Great content won’t rank if search engines can’t crawl, index, or render your site properly. Technical SEO is the foundation everything else stands on. Use this checklist to find and fix the issues holding your site back.
Make sure your site can be crawled and indexed
Search engines must be able to access your pages. Check that:
- Your
robots.txtisn’t accidentally blocking important pages - Key pages aren’t set to “noindex”
- Your XML sitemap is present and submitted to Google Search Console
Search Console’s Pages report shows exactly which URLs are indexed and why others aren’t — your first stop for diagnosis.
Improve site speed and Core Web Vitals
Speed is both a ranking factor and a UX essential. Measure with PageSpeed Insights and address the issues — optimise images, reduce JavaScript, and use caching. See our guides to Core Web Vitals and performance optimization.
Ensure mobile-friendliness
Google indexes mobile-first, so your mobile site determines your rankings. Confirm your site is fully responsive and that content matches the desktop version.

Use HTTPS
A secure site (HTTPS) is a confirmed ranking signal and a trust requirement. Free certificates via Let’s Encrypt make this universal — there’s no reason to run on HTTP.
Fix crawl errors and broken links
Broken links and 404 errors waste crawl budget and frustrate users. Crawl your site with Screaming Frog to find them, then fix or redirect with 301s.
Handle duplicate content
Duplicate or near-duplicate pages dilute ranking signals. Use canonical tags to indicate the preferred version. Google Search Central explains canonicalization in detail — especially important for e-commerce SEO.
Add structured data
Schema markup helps search engines understand your content and can earn rich results (star ratings, FAQs, breadcrumbs). Use Google’s structured data documentation and validate with the Rich Results Test.
Optimise your site architecture
A logical, shallow structure helps crawlers and users. Important pages should be reachable in a few clicks, with clear internal linking spreading authority throughout the site.
Manage your sitemap and redirects
Keep your XML sitemap current and free of broken or redirected URLs. When you change URLs, always set up 301 redirects so you don’t lose hard-earned rankings — critical during any website redesign.
Monitor continuously
Technical issues creep in over time as you add content and features. Make Search Console checks part of your routine maintenance so problems get caught early.
The takeaway
Technical SEO removes the obstacles between your content and the rankings it deserves. Work through this checklist, fix the foundations, and your on-page and off-page efforts will pay off far more. Want a full technical audit and fixes handled for you? Our SEO service starts exactly there.
